Assessing the Need for Charging Stations in Delhi's E-Rickshaw Market

To determine the feasibility and optimal locations for charging stations for e-rickshaw drivers in the Delhi NCR region, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative research methods combined with innovative technology.

Tech Driven Solution

Client Segment:
A transportation company seeking to expand its services by establishing a network of charging stations for e-rickshaws in Delhi.

Method:
A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating field research with technological mapping to provide a comprehensive understanding of the e-rickshaw market and the specific needs of drivers regarding charging infrastructure.

Data Collection
Field Mapping:
Conducted on-ground mapping of e-rickshaws operating in Delhi. Research teams accompanied e-rickshaw drivers throughout their daily routes to gather real-time data on their charging needs and behaviors.
Developed an application (APK) that facilitated the mapping of all e-rickshaw routes across Delhi NCR. This application collected data on travel patterns, frequency of stops, and potential locations for charging stations.

Quantitative Data Collection:
Surveys were administered to e-rickshaw drivers to gather quantitative data on:
Current charging practices and frequency of charging
Awareness and acceptance of charging stations
Willingness to pay for charging services

Qualitative Data Collection:
Conducted in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with e-rickshaw drivers to explore their perceptions, challenges, and needs related to charging infrastructure. This qualitative insight provided a deeper understanding of the drivers’ experiences and expectations.

Analysis
Mapping and Technology Integration:
Utilized the data collected from the APK to create visual maps highlighting the busiest routes and potential charging station locations. This helped identify areas with high e-rickshaw traffic and insufficient charging options.

Statistical Analysis:
Analyzed survey data using statistical methods to quantify drivers' charging needs, preferences, and potential market size for charging stations.

Thematic Analysis:
Thematic analysis was conducted on qualitative interview data to identify recurring themes and insights regarding the drivers’ attitudes towards charging infrastructure.

Findings:
The research enabled a comprehensive understanding of the charging needs of e-rickshaw drivers in Delhi. Key insights included:
High demand for accessible charging stations, particularly in areas with heavy e-rickshaw traffic.
Drivers expressed concerns about current charging options, citing difficulties in finding charging locations and the time required for charging.
Willingness to adopt charging stations if conveniently located along their routes, indicating a potential market for strategically placed charging infrastructure.

Solution
Based on the findings, the client was equipped with valuable insights to inform their strategy for establishing charging stations:
Recommendations were made for the optimal placement of charging stations based on mapped routes and driver feedback.
Proposed partnerships with local businesses and municipalities to facilitate the installation of charging infrastructure at key locations.
Suggested ongoing engagement with e-rickshaw drivers to refine service offerings and improve charging station accessibility.
